Situated 2 hours from Lagos, the village had no working water pump and therefore no access to safe drinking water. Long treks on foot to the nearest standpipe were the result, and especially girls and women suffered from these conditions as their tasks include the fetching of the water. Girls can not go to school because they lose many hours searching for clean drinking water. Women can not devote herselves to the other numerous tasks that are necessary to ensure the survival of the families.

To change this, the non-functional pump was to be replaced by a new water pump.

The project was significantly financed with funds from the German Embassy in Abuja, whose small scale fund allows the support of 5 to 6 similar projects per year. The project was conducted by the Development Support Institute, a local non-governmental organization.

In a solemn ceremony, the new water pump was launched by the Consul General of the Federal Republic of Germany in Lagos and the attaché in charge of development cooperation from Abuja. With traditional dances of the village women, enthusiastic drum choirs of the village men and festive speeches of the chiefs and high chiefs of the community, the inauguration of the new water pump was celebrated and the project "Clean drinking water for Ajido Village" was successfully completed.
