Germany contributes 15 Mio Euro to be used for the Polio Control Programme in Nigeria

On Friday, 23 November, German Finance Bank KfW, Nigerian Foreign Ministry and National Primary Health Care Development Agency signed an agreement on a German contribution of 15 Mio Euro aimed at the polio eradication in Nigeria. On that occasion German Ambassador to Nigeria, Dorothee Janetzke-Wenzel, underlined the importance of the measure. Since 1988 global polio infections have been reduced by 99 %. Today there are only three countries left in which endemic polio exists, in Afghanistan, Pakistan and unfortunately as well in the north of Nigeria.

Nigerian Government in cooperation with WHO and UNICEF initiated 2012/13 the “Nigeria Polio Eradication Emergency Plan” with the aim to terminate polio infections in Nigeria till the end of 2013. During the first three stages of the programme vaccination campaigns were financed. In the now beginning fourth phase operational costs for the implementation of the Emergency Plan will be covered. Main target group are children under five years in the relevant 12 Nigerian states. Polio is not curable but can be prevented by a four stage vaccination. German funds will be disbursed in December 2012 to UNICEF and WHO.
