The German Embassy has supported the project financially. On the Nigerian side CHAID (Center for Human Awareness and Intellectual Development) participated in the project.
In his greeting Dr. Weth in particular highlighted the human right for Education and the significance of school education for the further development also in the region Lafiya.
With the construction of the classrooms an important contribution for the extension of the primary education was achieved.
Kurikyo is a small, muslim village of 2.011 inhabitants. It is based not far from Lafia, capital of Nassarawa state in Nigeria. Around half of the population are children of primary school age but in fact only 150 attend the local school, a derelict building without furniture, so that the lesson for most of the students has to take place outside. During the rain season, classes frequently have to be cancelled. With an illiteracy rate of 99% the focussing on agriculture and small trade maybe are in need of an impulse from outside, in order to understand a newly built school house not as an utopia but as a vision that needs to be implemented. And this impulse came by Viola Huth who is employed by the consultancy Accenture and presently works as a VSO-Volunteer* in Nigeria.
With the construction of the two classrooms all constructional preconditions have been established. The first goal hence was achieved. But this is only a small step on the long way to achieve a good primary education, let alone a complete equipment of the school with tables, banks and teaching material. It is essential to remain in contact with national and local governments representives, to further train the teachers, to revise the curriculums, to introduce test procedures and to care for disipline in order to improve the school situation in total and to guarantee a good quality.
